Lake Hefner Fishing Guide: Shore Access, Docks & Local Rules
Lake Hefner gives Oklahoma City anglers several ways to fish: shoreline access, public docks and a boat option for covering more water. This Lake Hefner fishing guide helps you choose an access point, prepare for local rules and keep the first trip simple.

Choose an access point before leaving
OKC lists enclosed fishing piers north of the marina breakwater, at the northwest end of Firemen’s Cove and by Lion’s Children’s Playground, plus a covered pier near the marina. It also lists boat ramps with tending docks at the marina. Facilities can change, so check the OKC fishing page before you go. ODWC notes that the eastern shoreline offers gentle drive-up access.
For an easy first outing, choose one dock or shoreline area and arrive with time to find parking and read signs. If wind is strong, choose sheltered access; casting into a stiff headwind can make a short visit frustrating. Confirm whether an enclosed or covered dock is open.
What can you catch?
ODWC lists walleye, hybrid striped bass, catfish, white bass, crappie, sunfish and largemouth bass among Lake Hefner’s species. Walleye and hybrid striped bass are stocked annually; channel catfish are stocked occasionally. Stocking does not guarantee a bite, so check current conditions before choosing a target.
For a simple bank setup, bring a medium spinning rod, 6- to 10-pound line, small jigs or soft plastics, a bobber and bait hooks. Try small jigs for crappie and sunfish around dock edges, keeping casts clear of other anglers. For walleye, ODWC angler guidance identifies riprap as a seasonal option; work it slowly and watch footing when rocks are slick. A short cast along the edge can be more useful than repeatedly throwing into open water.

Lake Hefner permits and rules
Lake Hefner requires an Oklahoma City fishing permit in addition to a state fishing license unless exempt. Check current permit rates and exemptions on the City fishing page. ODWC lists a maximum of three rods and reels per person and up to three hooks per line at Hefner; treble hooks count as one hook under City rules. Local boating and bowfishing rules also apply. Read posted signs and the full City rules before setting up.
Limits can vary by water and species. Use the City’s current limit table and the ODWC Hefner page rather than relying on a rule remembered from another lake.
A simple plan for an enjoyable trip
- Check wind, weather and access before leaving.
- Bring one rod, a compact tackle box, pliers, water and sun protection.
- Choose one target species and one nearby backup access point.
- Give other anglers room, keep line out of walkways and pack out used line.
- Recheck permits, hours and closures on official pages.
