Bluestem Lake Fishing Guide: Bass, Crappie & Pawhuska Access

Bluestem Lake sits just west of Pawhuska in Osage County. ODWC lists it at about 865 surface acres, with 22.4 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 57.4 feet. The lake is operated by the City of Pawhuska, so anglers should plan for both state fishing rules and local lake requirements.

Fish species and starting tactics

ODWC identifies largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and white crappie as species of interest. For bass, work points, creek arms, and visible cover with soft plastics or moving lures, adjusting depth as water and weather change. For crappie, try small jigs or minnows around brush and other submerged cover. Bluegill anglers can use small hooks and worms or crickets near shore. For catfish, fish bait near the bottom around creek channels and other deeper structure.

Access, boating, and local rules

The City of Pawhuska lists public-use areas, picnic tables, swimming, and camping, including electric hookups at designated locations. Boat permits are required for boating and are available as daily or annual permits from the city; the city also says a state fishing license is required. Some docks are privately owned, and written permission from dock owners is required before using them. Do not assume a dock is public access.

Lake facilities and permitted uses may change, so check with the city before launching or camping. ODWC’s public-fishing listing describes the lake and species, while Pawhuska’s official lake page is the source for city permits and facilities.

Trip checklist

Bring a state fishing license if required, arrange the city boat permit if boating, and check current hours and lake notices before leaving. For the latest details, see ODWC’s Bluestem Lake page and the City of Pawhuska lake information. Always follow posted rules at the ramp and shoreline.
