Sooner Lake Fishing Guide: Hybrids, Saugeye & Access Rules

Sooner Lake fishing offers a distinctive Oklahoma fishery with warm-water discharge areas, open water, aquatic vegetation and a stocked mix of hybrid striped bass, saugeye and largemouth bass. The 5,400-acre lake is operated by OG&E and lies on U.S. 177 about 25 miles north of Stillwater. Bank access is limited; OG&E manages two boat ramps, including an ADA-compliant west ramp.

Fish species and what to target

ODWC lists largemouth bass, striped hybrid bass, saugeye, blue catfish and black and white crappie as species of interest. For hybrid striped bass, use a shad-style lure or bait and search open water where baitfish are present. For largemouth bass, work vegetation edges, brush piles and riprap. For saugeye, try a jig or other bottom-contact presentation along a drop or channel edge. These are starting patterns; check the latest report and adjust to current conditions.

The warm-water side

ODWC describes Sooner as a warm-water discharge lake. Its fishing guidance recommends looking around the warm-water side north of the west boat ramp for summer blue catfish, and notes boat anglers can also explore the eastern part of the lake near the island. For blue cats, the biologist’s suggested baits include fresh cut shad, bluegill, minnows or hot dogs; suspend them below a large bobber in warmer conditions and try a bottom rig when the water is cooler. Treat these as options to test, not guaranteed spots or bites.

Access and trip planning

OG&E manages two boat ramps, and the west ramp is listed as ADA compliant. ODWC says Sooner Lake is about 20 miles south of Ponca City on U.S. 177. Review the ODWC Sooner Lake page for the map, lake details and facility information before you leave. Because public bank access is limited, identify a legal shoreline option before planning a shore-only trip.

Important Sooner Lake fishing rules

Sooner has special rules. ODWC currently lists five striped bass per day with a 20-inch minimum, and a combined daily limit of six walleye, sauger and saugeye with an 18-inch minimum. The page also lists method and closed-area restrictions, including prohibitions around the dam and portions of the intake channel. Read the full, current ODWC rules for Sooner and statewide fishing regulations before fishing; the lake’s restrictions can affect where and how you fish.

Keep a short log of the side of the lake, water temperature, depth and bait that produced activity. On a windy day, use the ramps and protected water that suit your boat, and avoid restricted or unsafe areas around the plant and dam.
