Lake Elmer Fishing Guide: Bank Bass, Bluegill & Crappie

Lake Elmer is a compact public fishing lake about four miles northwest of Kingfisher, and its earthen fishing berms make it especially useful for anglers who want to fish from shore. The lake is shallow, so wind, water clarity and the cover beside each berm can matter more than fancy tackle. Check current conditions and regulations before driving out.

Where to fish from shore

ODWC lists fishing berms, one boat ramp and two water wells at Lake Elmer. Start at a berm that lets you reach a change in depth, brush or submerged cover. Fan-cast a few angles before moving: work a small jig or soft plastic along the edge, then fish the same area with a bobber if panfish are active. Wear shoes with grip; earthen banks can be slick after rain.

Bass, bluegill and crappie tactics

ODWC describes quality-size largemouth bass and good opportunities for larger bluegill. For bass, try a compact Texas-rigged plastic, small spinnerbait or shallow-running crankbait around cover, slowing down if the water is cold or muddy. For bluegill, use a small hook, split shot and worm or a tiny jig under a float; adjust the depth until you find fish. ODWC’s bank-fishing tip identifies late March through April as a typical crappie window: jig around the fishing berms and brush piles, changing color or depth if bites stop.

These are starting presentations, not a guarantee of a seasonal bite. Lake Elmer’s water is shallow; keep casts quiet, avoid walking directly over the edge you plan to fish, and move if fish are spooked.

Access, rules and trip checklist

From Kingfisher, ODWC’s directions are north on U.S. 81, then west on E0780 Road. The Department lists a two-rod-and-reel limit per person and allows bowfishing; special area rules can change, so confirm the current regulation page before fishing. Bring drinking water, sun protection and a bag for line and litter. There are no services described at the lake itself; Kingfisher is the nearest town for supplies.

Plan a straightforward first visit

For a short shore trip, pack one light spinning rod, a few small jigs, a float-and-hook setup and pliers. Fish one berm thoroughly, then relocate if you see no bait or surface activity. For more Oklahoma shore ideas, read our bank-fishing guide and Oklahoma crappie guide.
