American Horse Lake Fishing Guide: Bass, Bluegill & Access
American Horse Lake is a compact public fishing destination west of Geary in Blaine County. Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) describes it as a 100-acre lake with a concrete boat ramp, picnic tables, a water well, and populations of largemouth bass and bluegill. Its 6.8-mile shoreline and unusually deep 75-foot maximum make it a different prospect from the broad, shallow reservoirs farther east.
What you can catch
ODWC lists largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and both black and white crappie among the species of interest. The department specifically notes good-sized bluegill and catchable-size largemouth bass. Channel and blue catfish are also subject to a combined daily limit here, so check the current regulations if targeting catfish.
Where and how to fish
For bass, begin around shoreline cover and points, then work deeper water as the sun rises or conditions change. Soft plastics, small jigs, and shallow-running lures let you cover different depths without assuming the fish are holding in one place. For bluegill and redear, try small hooks with worms or crickets near shore, especially around vegetation and other cover. ODWC’s sunfish guide recommends small jigs or live bait under a bobber for this lake.
Bank anglers can explore access on the west side, while boaters can use the single concrete ramp. The lake is in a department-owned public area; nonfishing visitors may need an Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Passport or a current ODWC hunting or fishing license. Fishing is allowed with up to two rods and reels per person, and bowfishing is allowed. Confirm current area rules before going.
Location and planning
From Geary, ODWC directions are one mile north on U.S. 281, ten miles west on E0940, then about one and a half miles south on N2520. Geary is the nearest town for supplies. The lake has limited facilities, so bring water, tackle, and anything else you need for the day. The setting includes post-oak and blackjack forest and mixed-grass plains.
