Lake Overholser Fishing Guide: Catfish, Hybrid Bass & City Rules

Lake Overholser fishing is a convenient Oklahoma City option for bank and boat anglers, with a covered fishing pier, ramps, tending docks and fish attractors managed by the city. ODWC lists hybrid striped bass, catfish, white crappie, white bass, bluegill and walleye among the species of interest. One important detail: anglers generally need an Oklahoma City fishing license in addition to the state license unless exempt. Confirm current fees and exemptions before fishing.

Use the covered pier and docks

ODWC identifies a covered fishing pier on the southwest side of the lake, a ramp with tending dock on the east side near the patrol station, and another ramp and tending dock near the dam. Check city notices for current access and construction updates. At the pier, keep tackle compact, leave space for other anglers and try a few casting angles before changing locations. The lake is shallow, so do not assume a familiar route or shoreline will have the same depth after water-level changes.

Catfish and hybrid bass starting tactics

For channel catfish, begin with a bottom rig weighted just enough to hold your bait near a channel or deeper transition. Keep your rod secure and move after a reasonable wait without a bite. For hybrid striped bass or white bass, watch for surface activity or baitfish and try a small spoon, jig or shad-profile lure through the area. If there is no visible activity, fan-cast a point or dock area and vary depth before changing to a new lure.

Lake Overholser has city-managed fish attractors, which can give boat anglers a way to target known structure; check current location data and the lake map before navigating. Our catfish guide covers basic rig choices, and our Oklahoma City close-to-home fishing guide includes nearby options.

Review the local license and lake rules

The ODWC Overholser page says an Oklahoma City fishing license is required in addition to an Oklahoma state fishing license unless an exemption applies. The page also notes special methods rules, including a limit on rods and hooks. Verify the current city and ODWC rules before setting multiple rods or keeping fish. Swimming is prohibited at the lake; follow posted signs and keep casts away from other recreation users.

Before leaving, check lake level, weather, pier and ramp status, and your license requirements. Carry water, sun protection, pliers and a measuring device. For the rest of the trip plan, see our guide to reading ODWC fishing reports and Oklahoma license guide.
