I met up with my buddy Jesse and we decided to do some summer kayak fishing on Shell Lake Oklahoma. I grew up in the area but I had never fished Shell Lake. We did some exploring on the lake in our Lifetime Tamarac kayaks. Jesse has added a small trolling motor to his but I was stuck paddling like a sucker lol. This trip allowed me to land my 1st kayak bass! I focused on some rocky shaded areas with my shaky head. I was using a plasma tail worm from Bio spawn. When fishing these rocky areas you will get hung up but you can also catch a lot of fish.

Today we’re working on the Lowrance Hook2 7-inch install on Lifetime Tamarak Kayak. I saw that someone had posted on a Facebook community that Walmart had the Lowrance hook2 7-inch fish finder on sale for $100. I check out some reviews on YouTube and Amazon, they were very mixed. However, I noticed that people either really liked them or thought they were absolute garbage. Well, I have used Lowrance locators before and none of them were garbage. Besides that, I know Lowrance had a great warranty if something does go wrong. I decided why not give it a try. I hadn’t installed the 5-inch locator I had already purchased (Lowrance Hook Reveal). I threw caution to the wind and broke out my card and ordered the Hook2 without a second thought. Once it came in it was as I expected. Very nicely packaged and everything looked great. I decided since I had never installed a locator on a kayak why not use my experience as a what not to do? The installation was straightforward, and I opted for a thru hull install on the transducer. Everything fired up as expected and I am now ready for the on-the-water test to see how the transducer does. Here are the links to the parts I purchased to make this thing work.

I picked up some Reese transom ratcheting tie downs on Amazon for around $25. I really don’t like the style that came on the boat. If the boat isn’t exactly like the last time, it was loaded the straps have to be adjusted. When you’re like me I have several people launching and loading the boat. This means they almost always have to be adjusted. Not anymore! Now you just hook it to the boat and ratchet it down a few times.

Today we go see our friend that lives in OKC and of course I packed my Chill-N-Reel. She lives directly across from a neighborhood pond, and I was dying to see if I could catch anything, so we had to try it out. We didn’t expect much, but we started getting bites almost immediately. I used the Chill-N-Reel, and my wife used a 7-piece travel rod. We were fishing with Crappie bites weightless under a bobber. All in All, we had a great day of family fun fishing.

On this video I show you how to use depth shading to eliminate dead water. If you are like me and don’t get very much time on the water it is very important to get the most out of every minute. I have started using depth shading on every trip so I’m not wasting time on spots that are unproductive. Using weather, time of year, and water temp you can get a pattern started as soon as you start fishing. This will work for almost any species and for any type of structure or cover. I started using this on my Helix 5 Humminbird locator, now I use it on my 93 SV Garmin unit. Today my family is fishing on a chartered fishing trip with Sarasota Saltwater Adventures. We went to Sarasota Florida on our family vacation back in July 2021. I told my wife for my birthday I wanted to Charter a fishing trip while in Florida. We did extensive research on charter trips in and around Sarasota. We decided to book with Captain Casey from Sarasota Saltwater adventures. The selling point for us was the different trips he had available.

We booked the Florida Lifestyle Adventure trip and that is 1/2 the time fishing and the other 1/2 is all about wildlife and looking for shells and sharks’ teeth. Unfortunately, our trip fell on a red tide event. After discussing our options with Captain Casey we opted to go with an in-shore catch and release trip instead. Man Captain Casey had us on fish within minutes of anchoring down at our first stop. It was nonstop action of catching multiple species of fish. I only brought 2 cameras with me so we missed a lot of the action. I had my Osmo Action chest cam and an Osmo Pocket handheld. We ended up all fishing at the same time instead of taking turns when we first started. We had several doubles and at least one triple. We had an absolute blast fishing with Captain Casey. He is very knowledgeable about the area’s wildlife. He pointed out different types of birds and wildlife that have made their homes in the mangroves.

The area has some massive oceanfront beach homes. Captain Casey even pointed out several celebrities’ beach homes while we were out. All in all, I don’t think we could have picked a better charter for our family. We wanted to catch species of fish that we can’t catch here. Man did he deliver on that. Today we do some Striper fishing on the Lower Illinois River in Oklahoma. If you don’t know some of the huge Oklahoma striped bass come from this stretch of river. We meet up with our Oklahoma fishing guide Rocky Thomas at Gore Landing just before sunrise. It was a hot bluebird sky kind of day. We spent most of the morning fishing topwater and had some success but the fish wouldn’t commit well. We had numerous short strikes and a few misses. We even tried trolling live shad with no success. I caught a largemouth right after leaving the ramp but didn’t even have my camera on… We caught a few nice fish and had a great time. Today I finally do the Minn Kota Power drive I Pilot Trolling motor upgrade on Tracker V-18 boat DIY I pilot install. I have been putting off upgrading my trolling motor for far too long. I finally break down and purchased a 70Lb thrust Minn Kota 24v power drive trolling motor with I Pilot. This Power Drive trolling motor had the remote and spot lock features that had me sold on it. I picked up the Power Drive unit from Bass Pro and had it shipped to me. This was a huge upgrade from my existing 54Lb thrust foot pedal style Motorguide. The installation is pretty straightforward if you are replacing an older unit. Although on my boat I was upgrading from a 12v system to a 24v system. This made me have to upgrade some batteries and chargers as well.
